FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

ATTENDENCE ISSUES

HOW DO I REPORT AN ABSENCE?

Parents may report an absence by calling the attendence line at 831/637-5831, ext.(s) 102, 105, 107, 108 and 109.

HOW DO I FIND OUT IF MY STUDENT ATTENDED CLASS TODAY OR ANY PARTICULAR DAY?

Parents may access their student's attendence via School Loop, (if registered), otherwise call attendence at Ext. 102, 105, 107, 108 and 109.

WHY DO I  RECEIVE PHONE CALLS, EMAILS AND TEXTS TELLING ME MY STUDENT IS OR WAS ABSENT?

Our new reporting system allows teachers to take attendence within the first half hour of class.  Students who are absent or late beyond this time have email and phone calls reporting this to numbers listed in our student's records.

IF MY STUDENT IS NOT GOING TO BE IN SCHOOL FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Parents should come in to the Attendence office, (main building) to arrange this.  Depending on the reason for the extended absence, issue regarding homework and class credit need to be discussed so that parents are aware of all the ramificiatons of an extended absence.

WHO CAN I SPEAK TO ABOUT PUTTING MY STUDENT ON AN ATTENDENCE CONTRACT?

Parents should make an appt. with their student's Support Manager.  Each Manager covers a section of the alphabet and are listed here:

Shelly Maupin, ext. 117  Alpha A-Ga

Nick Rabago, Ext. 121  Alpha Ge-O

Adrian Ramirez, Ext. 103   Alpha P-Z

I RECEIVED A NOTICE INFORMING ME THAT MY STUDENT WAS ABSENT IN A PARTICULAR CLASS BUT MY STUDENT SAYS THEY WERE THERE.  HOW DO I CONFIRM THEY WERE PRESENT?

Parents should contact the teacher directly by calling the main school telephone number and dialing the teacher's ext., (room #) or via email.  Teacher's email address can be found on the main web page of the school.

I HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED THAT MY STUDENT IS OFFICIALLY TRUANT.  WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AND WHO SHOULD I SPEAK TO REGARDING THIS?

Parents are notified when students have missed the equivalent of three days unexcused absences.  This is done via the mail system to ensure that parents are aware of the situation.  San Benito High School does this to meet state requirements and to assist busy parents in keeping track of their student's attendence in school.

ACADEMIC ISSUES

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHORT-TERM, LONG-TERM  INDEPENDENT STUDIES AND HOME AND HOSPITAL?

Short-Term Independent Studies is for students who will miss 5 and no more than 25 days of school due to travel or temporary relocation. Long-Term Independent Studies (LTIS) offers a means of individualized educational planning for qualified students for a period of time beyond a few days.  A typical LTIS student is placed for a semester, an academic year, or the remainder of his/her high school academic career. There is specific criteria to be eligible for LTIS, which can be found in your student planner on page 7. Home Hospital is for students with a temporary disability which makes school attendance impossible or inadvisable by a doctor (MD).  A physicians note is required and must include the condition and estimated period of absence.

HOW DO I SET UP A PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE IF I BELIEVE MY STUDENT IS BEGINNING TO STRUGGLE?

Parents should contact their student's teacher directly to arrange this.  Teachers can be contect via email via the main school webpage or at their ext., which is their room number.  Parents are encouraged to do this as soon as soon as they become aware of the problem.  For conferences that include all of a student's teachers, parents should contact the Counselors assigned to their child.  Counselors are responsible for a section of the population and coverage is divided by Alpha.

Andy Prisco, Ext. 114, A- Di Salvo

Jim Caffiero, Ext. 122, Dias-Ga

Sue Rojcewicz, Ext. 127, Ki-Ro

Tim Pipes, Ext. 128, Re-Z

CAN I SWITCH TEACHERS?

No. If there is a problem with a specific instructor student is advised to meet with his/her counselor, teacher, and parent to address the student’s concerns, and foster honest/respectful communication between the teacher and student.  Requests based solely on personality preferences are not honored.

HOW DO I ARRANGE A CHANGE TO MY STUDENT'S FUTURE SCHEDULE?

Parents should contact their child's Guidance Technician. Guidance Technician's work in conjunction with Counselors to evaluate transcripts, track progress, and ensure student are in the right courses to satisfy high school and college requirements.  Guidance Technicians are responsible for a section of the population and coverage is divided by Alpha.  Changes made mid semester are strongly discouraged and allowed only in special circumstances.
